WrestleMania (also known as WrestleMania I) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by Wrestling Society X (WSX) and the first in the WrestleMania franchise. It took place on 26 April, 2009 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Background[]
The main event match heading into WrestleMania on the Raw brand featured Underground Champion Mike Cage defending the title against Monty Brown. The buildup to the match began after the 6 March episode of Raw where Cage and Ali G defeated Brown and Vampiro in a tag team match. After the match, Brown attcked Cage and knocked Cage unconscious after performing an Alpha Slam through the announce table. After the attck, Traci Brooks announced the match between Cage and Brown.
The main event heading match into WrestleMania on the Smackdown brand featured WSX Champion MC Steel defending the title against New Jack in a Extreme Elevation match for the WSX Championship. The buildup to the match began after the 20 March episode of Smackdown where Steel defeated New Jack in a singles match. On the 3 April episode of Smackdown New Jack defeated 24 other wrestlers in a Steel Asylum match to become the number one contender for the title.
The first annual Money in the Bank ladder match was announced for WrestleMania on the April 6 episode of Raw. Hurricane Helms and Abyss were the first to qualify defeating Psicosis and Antonio Banks on an episode of Smackdown. Both Wicked and John Morrison qualified on an episode of Raw by defeating The Joker and Toby Mahoney, with Jason Knox and APA qualifying by defeating Harlem Heat and Jack Evans.
Another main match heading into the event is the match between (Team Smackdown (Jamal, Antonio Banks, Team 3D (Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley) and Ben Storm with Amando Estrada) and Team Raw (Kid Kash, Troy Masters, The Gangstas (2-Pac and Lil Wayne) and Toby Mahoney with Hornswoggle). After the main event on the 3 April, 2009 episode of Smackdown, various Smackdown wrestlers attacked Raw wrestlers. On the 6 April episode of Raw, Pete Steel and Traci Brooks, the authority figures of Raw and SmackDown, announced 5 wrestlers from their respective brands to compete against each other at WrestleMania.
