The WCW World Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship originally used in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and later, the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). It was the original world title of the World Championship Wrestling promotion, spun off from the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. It existed in WCW from 1991 to 2001.
Following the acquisition of WCW by the WWF in March 2001, it became one of two world titles in the WWF, with its name being immediately abbreviated to the WCW Championship and finally, the World Championship in November. It continued to complement the then-WWF Championship until the following month, when both titles were unified to create the Undisputed WWF Championship. The Undisputed title retained the lineage of the WWF Championship, and the World Championship was retired until 2019.
The championship would revived in 2019 following WWE bringing back the companies' rival as a brand for the upcoming draft. This championship does not follow the linage of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship of the same name that was active from 1991-2001. Instead, having it's own legacy unlike the World Heavyweight Championship (WWE).
History[]
When ESPN began it's partnership with the WWE in 2017, one of the major plans for the partnership was to create two new brands for the company. Unable to agree with a title, WWE and ESPN decided to revive WWE's long since deactivated rivals ECW and WCW and make them the two new brands. ECW would be featured on the WWE network, causing the end of the Promotion's Cruiserweight-based Brand, 205 Live. While WCW and their PPV's would be featured on ESPN +. Causing the end of WWE's main minor show, Main Event. To Accommodate the relaunch of the brand, WCW would unveil the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and the inaugural champion would be decided via a 1 night tournament. Which would be won by Victor Walker after last defeating Punishment Martinez (now known as Damian Priest) in the finals.
