Royal Rumble 2008 |
Royal Rumble (2007) was the first annual Royal Rumble professional wrestling event produced by the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on January 28, 2007 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.
The main event was a Battle royal where The Game won a 30 man Royal Rumble match to be declared the number one contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Title. The undercard featured were the first-ever Royal Rumble match won by War Machine winning the number 1 contendership for the vacant WWE Championship, while, The Game winning the vacant WWE Intercontinental Title.
Development
Vince McMahon contrived the idea of the Royal Rumble Match. The rules were that each SuperStar had to choose a number between 1 and 30. The # 1 and # 2 entrants would begin the match while the other participants would join the match every two minutes thereafter. Participants had to eliminate their opponents by tossing them over the top rope with both feet then touching the floor. The winner would be the last wrestler remaining after all others had been eliminated. It was similar to a battle royal.
Background
Royal Rumble featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that were played out on WWE Raw - World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) primary television program. Wrestlers portrayed a villain or a hero as they followed a series of events that built tension, and culminated into a wrestling match or series of matches. The event featured wrestlers from WWE's Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands—a storyline division in which WWE employees were assigned to a television program of the same name.
The prime match scripted into the Royal Rumble was the annual Royal Rumble match, which has been held at every Royal Rumble event since its inception. The match featured 30 male wrestlers from WWE's three brands; 23 participants were officially announced for the match. The match ends when one wrestler remains in the ring, after all 29 other wrestlers have been eliminated via being tossed over the top ring rope and having both feet touch the floor. The winner earned an opportunity to challenge for the WWE Championship at WWE's March WrestleMania I pay-per-view.
The main rivalry from the Raw brand featured Mike Krouser challenging Josh Samuels. Mike Krouser earned his match against Josh Samuels after winning by questionable motives by Samuels on the December 1, 2006 episode of Raw.
Another rivalry from Raw was the number one contindership for the WWE Championship.
The main rivalry from Raw heading into the Royal Rumble was the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship.
In the weeks leading into the event, the SuperStars drew a number between the numbers 1 through 30 in either the Number 1 Contender position at WrestleMania I or the Intercontinental Championship Title Royal Rumble Matches. Vince McMahon ruled that the Intercontinental Champion and the Number 1 contender will face each other at WrestleMania I in two months.
Event
Before the event went live on pay-per-view, Mike Krouser and Josh Samuels had a short lived match when Mike Krouser gave Josh Samuels a 5 star frog splash from the top rope then a pin.
In the 30 man, Number 1 Contender Match, War Machine, who entered the match at number 6, won the match thus gaining the Number 1 Contendership for the Vacant WWE Championship title at WrestleMania I against the WWE Intercontinental Champion.
In the second 30 man Royal Rumble Match, The Game, who entered the match at Number 30, won the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship and Number 2 Contendership at WrestleMania I to face War Machine for the Vacant WWE Championship.
Aftermath
Directly following the Royal Rumble Match, Vince McMahon left the WWE to World Championship Wrestling leaving his nephew Chae McMahon to lead the WWE for the remaining term. It was finally known that Chae McMahon acquired WWE in bankrupt court and became the owner of WWE. During this time, Chae McMahon split the company into two halves. One called Raw Brand and the other SmackDown Brand. War Machine dominating the competition until WrestleMania I while The Game held the Intercontinental Championship title until WrestleMania I. The WWE World Tag Team Championship titles were up for graps in a 16 team tournament. The finals of the tournament will be at No Way Out pay-per-view event.
