Paul Proteus (born 1975), better known as "Deadeye" Proteus" or "Hardkore" Proteus is a retired American professional e-fedder who has preformed in several popular e-federations as either a main eventer or mid-carder. Known for his confrontational attitude, irreverent (and often offensive) sense of humor, and extreme in-ring tactics, Proteus quickly rose to prominence in most e-feds he joined, before retiring from full-time competition in 2002.

Career[]

In the late 1990s, Paul Proteus, an auto mechanic who had grown up in Dennisport, Massachusetts (on Cape Cod), began training to be a wrestler in Boston. His high pain tolerance and creative use of props made him a natural at the hardcore "garbage" wrestling that was en vogue at that time, and before long, he was ready to make his professional debut in the local federation Insane Hardcore Bay State Wrestling.

Insane Hardcore Bay State Wrestling[]

Wrestling under a mask and taking the nickname "Hardkore," Proteus debuted at IHBSW's Red Christmas show in December 1999, defeating Hellhound via KO by hitting a flapjack (his finisher at the time) onto a chair. "Hardkore" Proteus quickly set his sights on the IHSBW Hardcore championship, and became infamous for bringing a cardboard box full of "fun things to use" to the ring with him.

Proteus won the first IHBSW Hardcore championship in a cage match in December of '99, and defended it several times. He became the first IHBSW wrestler to hold two titles at once, when he won the IHBSW Federation Championship from Deus X. Machina. Machina interfered in his next Hardcore title defense, however, and Proteus lost the belt, only to regain it a week later... and then lose the Federation title in short order.

Proteus lost the Hardcore title again in a five-man "Match From Hell." During the match, a spot went wrong, and Proteus's eye was permanently injured. During his time recuperating from the possibly career-ending injury, IHBSW folded.

Extreme Wrestling Corporation[]

When he had finished healing from his eye injury, Proteus signed with the Extreme Wrestling Corporation in 2000, and re-debuted as "Deadeye" Proteus, losing the mask and gaining what would become his signature eyepatch. In the EWC, Proteus reunited with his old friends The Spanish Burrito and El Loco Hombre, and formed a stable called The Hardcore Coalition, which feuded with EWC's Corporation team.

Deadeye won the Hardcore title in EWC briefly, and was a consistent presence in the midcard, but never quite pushed through to the main event level. With the rest of THC, he was both ally and rival of another group, The Sedition, led by the maniacal The Rev. The Rev was the one who Deadeye won the Hardcore title from -- only to then lose it to the Rev's stablemate and enforcer, Gladiator. During this time, Deadeye made appearances in the Rev's own promotion, Sedition Wrestling Alliance. In 2001, the EWC began to lose steam, and he and THC jumped ship to a new federation.

Premiere Wrestling Association[]

While under contract to the EWC, Deadeye moonlighted in Canada's Premiere Wrestling Association, where he won (and lost) the tag titles multiple times with fellow hardcore star Andrew Freyling, in an ongoing, horribly convoluted feud with the pWo.

Killer Championship Wrestling[]

In early 2001, Deadeye and THC debuted in Blade Claven's Killer Championship Wrestling. In his first match, Deadeye won a thirty-man Hell in a Cell elimination match for the KCW World Heavyweight Championship, after throwing X-23 from the top of the cell. He remained KCW champion for around six months, and during this time also picked up the KCW Stable Championship with THC. During his title reign, Deadeye feuded primarily with Mikey, leader of rival stable D-Generation X, whom Deadeye eventually bested in the KCW King of the Beach tournament. He also briefly moonlighted in the fly-by-night fed MizzKitty's Championship Wrestling, where he won two titles on the first (and only) show.

After losing the World Heavyweight gold, Deadeye remained a fixture of KCW, acquiring both of the midcard titles -- Intercontinental and United States -- as well as winning the 2002 Lone Survivor tournament. He remained with KCW until mid-2002, at which time the federation closed.

Retirement[]

After KCW folded in 2002, Deadeye took a sabbatical from the ring, mostly to rest the numerous nagging injuries that had built up thanks to his hardcore brawling style. He has returned to the ring several times since, most notably in Alpha Championship Wrestling and the Badd Wrestling Alliance, but left both federations quickly. Though he's been enjoying life outside of the ring for the better part of a decade, he's still got one more run left in him...
