Before The Ring

Matthew James O'Brien was born in Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, before moving to the United States at the young age of seven. He started out living in San Diego, California until moving to the Hollywood area, in hopes to find work in the show business. After landing a few roles as side-characters in local television programs, including his short-term recurring role as Detective Tony Miller on CSI: Chicago, O'Brien realized that his heart was no longer settled in the film and television industry.

O'Brien would then venture into many capital projects and investments shortly after his Hollywood stint, netting multi-millions on capital investments and speculations based off of the 2005 Housing Market Crash.

Professional Wrestling Career

The Beginning

After successfully making his money, O'Brien would later take a side-gig with a local professional wrestling promotion and a make a move to Atlanta, Georgia to work for Prime Time Pro Wrestling (PTPW)[3], debuting under the ring name of Matt Nitro. He would later go onto become a multi-time Cruiserweight Champion with the company, before departing a few years later.

Virtual Attitude Wrestling

After his departure from PTPW, Matt Nitro signed on with Virtual Attitude Wrestling and started one the VAW's most dominant and controversial factions, The Union, with fellow wrestlers Lucas and The Wrath. Over time, he built The Union up brick-by-brick, causing chaos among the ranks of VAW, and eventually added both Jeni Porta and 'Rated X' Scott Hex to the faction. However, following the release of Matt Nitro from VAW in September of 2013, The Union crumbled and was considered no longer active within the company.

In December of 2016, it was announced via the company's official Twitter page that Nitro had signed a half-year contract with the organization and would be making his return on the Season 4 premiere episode on January 4th, 2017. At the event, Nitro faced then-VAW Legacy Champion, Tyler Crisis, in a losing effort for the title.

After weeks of back-and-forth rivalry, Nitro challenged Crisis for the VAW Legacy Championship once more on the March 4th, 2017 edition of Elite. Following a slight interference by newcomer, MRC Pasta Lopez, Nitro was able to capitalize on the distraction and claim the victory, thus becoming the new VAW Legacy Champion.

Independent Circuit, Injury, & Return

After being let go from VAW in 2013, Nitro set the independent circuit on fire in 2014, competing in promotions all across the United States. However, after only a few months, Nitro was involved in a serious car accident on the way home from a local wrestling show he had worked earlier that night, sidelining the wrestler for months.

While recovering from the injuries he sustained during the crash, Nitro began to write music, but soon realized that his career in music would not become as successful as that of his wrestling career. During this time, Nitro faded away from the professional wrestling industry, but later returned to the ring after nearly a year and a half absence, following multiple phone calls he received from independent wrestling promoters throughout the United States[4].

Now back in the business, Nitro is considered one of the most eccentric, charismatic individuals to ever step foot in the ring by fans and wrestlers all across the world.

New Millennium Wrestling

In October of 2015, it was announced via the official Twitter account of [Millennium Wrestling (NWS)|New Millennium Wrestling (NMW)] that Nitro had signed a one-match deal with the company through a recent talent-sharing agreement with the Virtual World Wrestling Alliance (VWWA). On the November 2nd, 2015 edition of NMW Rise, Matt Nitro made his official in-ring debut for the promotion, squaring off against Stan Warbaum. In the end, Nitro rolled Warbaum up for the victory.

Following his match with Stan Warbaum, Nitro took over a backstage role as a producer and road agent, filling in for the recently-released Seth Cameron, who moved on to a different project with Virtual Wrestling Entertainment (VWE).

Virtual Wrestling Entertainment

2016 Run

In February of 2016, it was announced by Hugh Howard of the IPWA Insider that Matt Nitro had negotiated and signed a contract with [Wrestling Entertainment (VWE)|Virtual Wrestling Entertainment (VWE)], under a semi-exclusive deal. He made his official VWE debut on the March 17th, 2016 edition of VWE Thursday Night Pulse in a match against "The Mafioso" William Naples, under the ring name of Matt Nitro. Nitro made a second appearance for the promotion the following week on the March 23rd edition of VWE Wednesday Night Primetime, in a match against "The Churchboy" Vince Easterwood. On the April 4th edition of VWE PULSE, Nitro squared-off against Braden Karsin. It was in this match where Nitro sustained a serious shoulder injury, which sidelined him until late 2016.

Return to VWE

In July of 2017, it was again announced by the IPWA Insider that Nitro had once again signed with Virtual Wrestling Entertainment under an exclusive deal.

On the August 20th, 2017 edition of VWE PULSE, Matt Nitro made his return to the ring for Virtual Wrestling Entertainment in a match against Bert "Turbo" O'Neil[5], who after interference from Mr. Hollywood, was able to score the victory over Nitro. On the September 3rd, 2017 edition of VWE PULSE, Matt Nitro, now under the ring name Nitro Kyx, answered an open-challenge put out by Drake Edwards, in a match that Edwards reigned victorious.

On the September 10th, 2017 edition of VWE PULSE, Nitro Kyx squared off against "The Gunslinger" Matt Asadar in the main event of the show. Following interference from Nyle Nightfire, Nitro was able to capitalize on the opportunity and score the victory over Asadar.

Following his match against "The Gunslinger" Matt Asadar, Nitro announced via Twitter that due to personal reasons taking place beyond the ring, he would not longer be able to dedicate his life to professional wrestling and would be stepping back from the industry, hanging up his boots in the process.

MMA/Boxing Career

In May of 2014, it was announced via the official Virtual Attitude Wrestling social media accounts that Mixed Combat Fighting, a then-defunct MMA promotion, would be making its return for a special one-season event. A few short days later, Matt Nitro, competing under his real name, was announced as a competitor for the promotion, after signing a deal with Team Global Crisis.

After participating in a few scheduled, and sanctioned, fights with the likes of [Actor|David Hawk Actor] and Brandon Ghost, O'Brien was released from his contract with the promotion after failing a drug test, thus violating the company's wellness policy.

In August of 2014, Matt Nitro made an appearance during a Pro Boxing League event, sitting ringside. It was announced the following week that Nitro had a signed a one-fight deal with the league and that his first opponent would be ["The Nature Boy" Alpin Criss|"The Nature Boy" Alpin Criss]. On August 22nd, 2014, Criss defeated Nitro in the 2nd round via knockout.
