The 2014 Night of Champions was the eighth annual Night of Champions professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It took place on September 21, 2014, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, and was the first Night of Champions event to livestream on the WWE Network, which launched in February. The theme of the event was that every championship promoted on WWE's main roster at the time was defended.

Eight matches were contested at the event. Outside of 2, every match was a championship match. Only three titles changed hands.

Background[]

Production[]

Night of Champions was an annual pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE since 2007. The 2014 event was the eighth event in the Night of Champions chronology. It was held on September 21, 2014, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to traditional PPV, it was the first Night of Champions to livestream on the WWE Network, which launched earlier that year in February. As per the theme of the event, every championship promoted on WWE's main roster at the time was defended. These included the WWE Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, the United States Championship, the WWE Tag Team Championship, the WWE Hardcore Championship, and the WWE Divas Championship.

Storylines[]

The card consisted of eight matches that resulted from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portrayed heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results were predetermined by WWE's writers, while storylines were produced on WWE's weekly television shows, Raw and SmackDown.

Brock Lesnar vs John Cena[]

After defeating Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, Brock Lesnar was rewarded and was rewarded in kayfabe with a brand new contract with even lesser dates on it which would allow Lesnar to remain champion for longer, and a brand new Championship design by the Authority. As he even became a honorary member of the Authority as a result through Stephanie McMahon's orders. While celebrating his new earnings, John Cena would interrupt Lesnar's Advocate Paul Heyman and issued a challenge on behalf of Bryan as he knows Bryan would want anyone else to defeat Lesnar and bring back the title off of Lesnar by any means. With no real reason to accept, Heyman on the behalf of Lesnar, refused. The following week, Cena issued the challenge once again, only this time, it would be directed at the authority. Triple H, would accept on the condition that if Cena would lose, he could never challenge for the championship as long as Lesnar was still champion. On the RAW before Night of Champions, Lesnar and Cena would make it official with a official contract signing which both men signed. Following a exchange of heated words directed at both men, alongside each members supporters in Daniel Bryan, The Authority, and Paul Heyman, a wild brawl would ensue where both men would be busted open during it with it culminating with Cena hitting his finisher the Attitude Adjustment on Lesnar through a table.
