Money in the Bank is an annual gimmick pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE since 2010. The concept of the show comes from WWE's established Money in the Bank ladder match, in which multiple wrestlers use ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract that guarantees the winner a match for a world championship at any time within the next year.[3] For 2014, only one Money in the Bank ladder match occurred and the winner received a contract for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match, following the unification of the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs in December 2013. The 2014 event was the fifth Money in the Bank. The event was previously held in July, but for 2014, the event was moved to June and was held on June 29, 2014, at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to traditional pay-per-view outlets, the 2014 event was the first Money in the Bank to livestream on the WWE Network, which launched in February.[4][5]

Storylines[]

The card consisted of eight matches that resulted from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portrayed heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results were predetermined by WWE's writers,[6][7] while storylines were produced on WWE's weekly television shows, Raw and SmackDown.

The All Star WWE World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match[]

Ever since his victory at WrestleMania XXX, The Authority has been trying and failing to find ways to get the WWE World Heavyweight Championship off of Daniel Bryan. Their first attempt was to seek Kane onto Bryan in hopes of having Kane destroy or injure Bryan enough to have Bryan relinquish the championship. Their feud would culminate at Extreme Rules in Bryan's first defense of the belt in a name sake Extreme Rules Match where Bryan would end up winning. After that, Bryan would fool the Authority into believing he's relinquishing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Payback following rumors of him having problems and complications with his neck and suffering from multiple concussions and seizures during matches, with the latter, one episode going viral on Youtube and Twitter. While that was true that he was going through this, in truth, Bryan fooled his rivals and stated that he is still going to perform and defend his WWE Championship at any Pay-Per-View he can. On the June 2nd episode of RAW, Stephanie McMahon would put that to the test by having him defend the titles at Money in the Bank against 7 other wrestlers who would qualify in multiple qualifying matches over the course of the next few weeks which would coincide with the Money in the Bank qualifying matches. On the same episode, Triple H would insert Randy Orton as the first participant outside of Bryan himself. Giving him a first round by and Sheamus and Chris Octane would defeat Ryback and Alberto Del Rio respectively. on the June 13th episode of Smackdown, Bray Wyatt would defeat Roman Reigns with some help from Seth Rollins, on the June 16th episode of RAW, John Cena would defeat Kane to secure his spot in the match in a stretcher match and Dolph Ziggler defeated Rey Mysterio, and Batista would defeat Mark Henry to qualify on the June 23rd episode of RAW.
