The Money in the Bank

breifcase.]]

The Money in the Bank ladder match is a professional wrestling ladder match held by Wrestling Society X (WSX) annually at their pay-per-view event, WrestleMania. The match can features eight participants, with the objective being to retrieve a briefcase that is suspended above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract, which guarantees a match for any of WSX's three world titles: the WSX Championship, Underground Championship, or the FCW Championship. The contract is valid for one year up to the next year's WrestleMania, and the briefcase holder—dubbed "Mr. Money in the Bank"—can cash in the contract for a world title match (any of the three), at the date, place, and time of their choosing. The briefcase may also be defended in matches, similar to how championships are defended.

History[]

2009[]

The concept for the Money in the Bank match was introduced in April 2009 by John Morrison. He pitched the idea on an episode of Raw to General Manager Traci Brooks. Hurricane Helms and Abyss were the first to qualify defeating Psicosis and Antonio Banks on an episode of Smackdown. Both Wicked and John Morrison qualified on an episode of Raw by defeating The Joker and Toby Mahoney, with Jason Knox and APA qualifying by defeating Harlem Heat and Jack Evans. Wicked ended up winning in 2009.
